Programme doctorale

The IRSET PhD Program provides advanced, interdisciplinary training in epidemiology, virology, toxicology, reproductive biology, genomics & bioinformatics as well as signaling & cancer. PhD students receive theoretical and experimental training, and carry out a research project under the supervision of an Irset group leader. The University of Rennes 1’s life sciences doctoral school has rules that stipulate monitoring of each PhD student’s progress by a Thesis Committee of experts as well as a Tutor who is in charge of mentoring the student. To ensure adequate supervision a group leader (or a researcher who is entitled to train PhD students) cannot accept more than two individuals at the time.

Funding is provided either via fellowships allocated by the doctoral school or via grants obtained by the PhD student’s supervisor. Applicants must hold at the time of their enrollment an appropriate university degree qualifying them to enter a PhD program.

IRSET provides access to an excellent infrastructure for modern biomedical research. PhD students learn how to read and interpret scientific literature, and how to carry out hypothesis-driven research. Special emphasis is placed on their ability to interpret their data and to present their results both orally and in writing. PhD students at Irset are enrolled at the University of Rennes 1’s life sciences doctoral school. Once the research project is completed – typically within 3-4 years – the candidate is asked to submit a written thesis based on at least one first-author publication in an international peer-reviewed journal, and to do a public thesis defense.

PhD candidates are encouraged to pursue a research career including post-doctoral training or to seek opportunities in the public sector, academic teaching & research or industrial research & development.

IRSET hosts a vigorous student body that organizes seminar series and career guidance events. PhD students are also expected to participate in IRSET events and international scientific meetings to discuss resarch projects and to listen to presentations from more experienced collleagues and to defend their projects either in the form of posters or short talks.

Rennes is a hub for environmental-, and life sciences, proteomics and information technology. It is the capital of Brittany and a culturally very active city of 200 000 inhabitants that boasts two universities and France’s largest Public Health School.
